Driver in "Oh I didn't see you" Shocker

Sorry to hear about this, is that a Magna frame? You'd be surprised at the number of people who who look one way and not the other, or just plain don't look at all

what's the plan with the rear wheel now?

Cheers. It's the Vantage CBX frame with the earlier & better tubing - 30mm Seatpost.

The bike is surprisingly lightweight for what it is - particularly at the rear triangle. There were later versions made, but noticeably weightier, and nowhere near as much fun to ride.

I've owned it for nearly 20 years, but it's now retired from Off Road use.

I'll get a suitable rim and rebuild the wheel - I had already converted the rear XT Parallax hub to 130mm a while back.

That should just true right up... few turns with a spoke key, right as rain!

Glad to read you're OK.

If all that's bent is a wheel and mech, then maybe not too much to worry about. I would do things properly in terms of reporting it, though - sometimes people who are awfully nice at first, turn into won't-look-you-in-the-eye revisionists once they've had time to calm down, think about things, and consider their liability.

So, cover your back, Jack. I'm not one to suggest pursuing claims, especially claims that aren't needed, but just be sure you've done all you can in terms of process, then you've not just taken somebody's word that all will be OK - people and stories change.

Yeah pop it in the stand for a quick true-up... job done!

Cheers for the advice. Ernie has explained what to do, and has made it very clear to me that people can and do change how they initially appear to be.

bud,
re our chat before..inform the local Police, they will give you a unique ref. number , get yourself checked out with your GP, then get for the prices repairs or replacement parts, the guy seems fair from what you say, he should understand...remember he went into the back of you ..if he does get stroppy you can always go through his insurance...you know it makes sense

Topman

Ernie

Cheers dude,
I'm very grateful for your help and advice earlier. Just doing some more pictures at the moment

Should have gone down to the Brighton Big Dog - is it raining down there? It's chucking it down in West Berkshire at the moment

Pip.

Glad your ok, but must have hit you hard to bend the wheel that badly !!

Whats the Brighton Big Dog ?? Im based just outside Brighton and its really sunny :D

I have now got a URN number from the police.

They were polite, but I did get the feeling that the law isn't really set up to accommodate the cyclist in this sort of accident.... Anyway, onwards.

I'm amazed that I came out of it unharmed.
I think that I kinda jumped away as I felt the crunching begin.

The Mech does look a bit grim around the B-knuckle pivot - shame really, I had really looked after it.

Pleased your all ok. Have been riding on the road alot more myself again recently as I've been trying to commute more. I can honestly say there are some real inconsiderate drivers out there, many whom pull caravans and forget that they are pulling them when they pass you. Not that all caravaners are the same. *rant over*

Once again glad you are ok and hope you get things sorted out. :)

You're inevitably going to suffer some negative physical reaction to this collision within the next few days and should read the following carefully...

I would definitely report the incident to the Police ASAP if I were you.

Thanks for the link.
It does demonstrate that damage to a bicycle from a road accident is not really accommodated by the police / law. I felt the same when I contacted them yesterday and got a URN - see above.

I have printed off a quote in the form of a CRC Wish List together a letter, which I will drop round to the driver's house this morning. His reaction will help me decide my next move.

Even though I do drive, I choose not to own a car, and I cycle every local journey that I make. I have definitely noticed an increase in traffic and a decrease in road courtesy over the years.

The car that hit my bike however was a Toyota Prius Hybrid Electric Automatic.

That goes some way to explain why I didn't initially notice that it was approaching from behind. I heard something, but not a normal car engine noise. I only just caught a gimps of the approaching front end in my peripheral vision. It's a shame that the driver didn't seem to have any, although he did blame the shape of his car for blocking his vision!
By the time it had made contact, it was too late to hop out of the way.

I would be more concerned with the damage to yourself - you cannot suffer that kind of rear impact without some form of whiplash/concussion; you just don't realise it yet...

The slightest stiff neck/headache/ sore back is 'personal injury' that needs to be reported - and the symptoms can materialise a surprisingly long time after the event...
