This morning:
Just popped into town on my dear old "Gay Lord Butler".... when the car driver behind me proceeded in a forward direction, whilst looking in another.

Usual circumstances at a mini roundabout.

I had decided to let a car approaching the mini roundabout from my right go passed. The car driver behind me assumed I had gone - he was looking up the road to his right and ploughed into me with his automatic rolling forward.

Sadly the real pisser is the Claud Butler was fitted with a superb condition XT RD-M739, which is now probably a right off.

Cheers guys - yes I'm fine thanks. I'm just going through the "If only I had...." stage at the moment.

A lovely condition Mavic 217 SUP rim and Shimano XT RD-M739 rear Mech, are both now U/S.

The driver was shaken too, but he did give me a lift home, so things could have been worse.

Apparently thats one of the most common accidents, but you'd think people would be more careful and check when its a cyclist in front of them.
The main thing is that you're OK but will you get any compensation for the broken bits? And is the frame OK?

I can rebuild the wheel and replace the mech. I'll see about matching the parts, but it's not quite so vital for that old commuting / shopping bike.

The frame seems to be o.k., even the gear hanger looks straight.

The driver currently seems to be willing to give me the money for repairs, although another Retrobike member (who would certainly know about these things) has given me some official advice with regards to reporting a R.T.A.

bud,
re our chat before..inform the local Police, they will give you a unique ref. number , get yourself checked out with your GP, then get for the prices repairs or replacement parts, the guy seems fair from what you say, he should understand...remember he went into the back of you ..if he does get stroppy you can always go through his insurance...you know it makes sense

Cheers dude,
I'm very grateful for your help and advice earlier. Just doing some more pictures at the moment

Should have gone down to the Brighton Big Dog - is it raining down there? It's chucking it down in West Berkshire at the moment

Sorry to hear about this, is that a Magna frame? You'd be surprised at the number of people who who look one way and not the other, or just plain don't look at all

what's the plan with the rear wheel now?

That should just true right up... few turns with a spoke key, right as rain!

Glad to read you're OK.

If all that's bent is a wheel and mech, then maybe not too much to worry about. I would do things properly in terms of reporting it, though - sometimes people who are awfully nice at first, turn into won't-look-you-in-the-eye revisionists once they've had time to calm down, think about things, and consider their liability.

So, cover your back, Jack. I'm not one to suggest pursuing claims, especially claims that aren't needed, but just be sure you've done all you can in terms of process, then you've not just taken somebody's word that all will be OK - people and stories change.
