Double build: Zaskar and P7 RS

Update time on the zaskar: amazingly my setup of 8 speed shifters, six speed cassette and 10 speed derailleur isn't creating perfect shifts. Seven speed wide range cassette incoming, ill stick the 7 speed gripshifts on when that arrives at the same time. For now at least the pace forks are going to stay out- I'll keep an eye out for the manitou crown/steerer though...

P7 has been ignored- might try and get the new wheels on and get it out in the next day or so...

I bet the 10 speed derailleur is the main cause of the issue although 7 speed shifters should help overcome the difference in the spacing but i have my doubts due to the derailleur being designed for narrower spacing .

So the Pace forks are being kicked to one side then while you sort the steerer out .

Yes i hope you do sort the P7 out soonish and it will look really good with the new wheels fitted so i look forward to seeing that completed ..

In my head it's the distance the chain is being moved as opposed to the width of the rear mech- we'll see which of us is right when the 7 speed cassette and shifters are on; if I still have issues I'll look for an older mech (I have one in the box, but it's f-ugly!)

Well i hope your right but i still see it in myhead as being the rear mech so what's the fugly rear mech then as i've got a 2010 tourney which i bought cheap a few years back which looks okay but works crap with grip shift so if the fugly rear mech is cheapishly made like the my Tourney then it will still give notchy shifts ..

Its an old sram esp thingy- looks very plasticy and could do with some grease. Not sure how well it will work but at least it has the right setup for the shifters- it's probably the right model for the gripshifts I'm using thinking about it!

To me it's possibly worth a closer inspection but if it's a bit plasticky like you say then it just maybe more trouble than it's worth but you won't really know until you've checked it out ..

I think its probably the mech too. Newer (nearly all?) SRAM have a different pull ratios to stuff that was meant for old skool shimano. Afaik only the base model stuff had shimano pull ratio's and I doubt that includes a 10sp mech. The earlier Gripshift and Sachs grips (SRAM merged the 2 shifters using Sachs innnards and gripshift branding afaik) would have been Shimano pull.

Cheap option to fix might be a Cog Hog (google it) - although would probably get a 7/8/9 speed rear mech for the same price and will be almost guaranteed to work.

Edit: Sheldon brown confirms ESP rear mechs are 1:1 pull - ie non-shimano.

Good read here :

If you are a on a budget or a mad scientist its also worth reading the next section on alternate clamping positions for the rear mech cable. Mostly used for mixing Shimano and Campy but worth a read.

The whole Sheldon Brown site is worth a read - you can get lost in there for hours.
