You might look into the Gary Fisher G2 geometry. I think a short 50mm stem was part of that. Gary originated the 29" concept. His partnership with Trek gave him enough clout to move the industry to that size. He worked hard to get the 29ers to handle like the 26" bikes. Maybe a Works Componenets angled headset to dial in the trail for the proper effect?
