Does anyone know anything about marine diesel engines?

Like, how can you tell if they're overheating? I stopped tonight and cleaned the sea filter (which seemed OK), but that's about the limit of my knowledge with them. To me, the engine is the expensive yellow thing under the deck.

Check that you have water emerging somewhere from a little pipe. It is water cooled? Other than that it is a slow reving engine so if it smells very hot, something isn't right.

What engine is it :?: my father is a forman on the norfolk broads at a boatyard marine engineer extraordinary basically if you have water emerging from the side of your boat (and you have not hit an ice berg) Then you should be o.k.if your exhaust pipe sealant burns off and you sink rapidly then you have an overheating issue,but not for long

Sounds like the impeller may be blocked or the filter clogged.Check also that the the drive to the impeller isnt loose and slipping :?

Do not run it till you've checked these things.

Broken impeller is possible - they are rubber paddlewheels and need the vanes to bend to work. Typically the vanes break off...

As with everything on the canals thanks to our unseasonably hot spring, it was weeds blocking the seafilter and weeds around the prop.
