Looking to upgrade my cranks, been offered a lovely 10sp road chainset and external b/b but im currently running 9sp....will they be compatible without issues?

Thanks!

yep, will work ok. The only deficiency will be that with the 10 sp chainrings being slightly narrower, it will allow some lateral sloppiness of the chain, which you will notice when youre on the inner ring and the smaller sprockets (the chain will slightly rub the outer ring and make a slight ringing sound), but performance will not be compromised. If you have doubts, you can use a 10 speed chain with your 9 speed mechs and cassette - Ive done this and its ok

The way to stop the 'tinkling' of the chain against the inside edge of the big ring when in the small ring/smallest rear sprocket is just to insert some 1mm washers between the big ring and the crank.

Did this to my bike, now sorted.

problem then is steve, it might bugger up the front indexing if its shimano kit?? dont know, I'm using campag with no front indexing

Am using a 10spd sram chainset, 10spd sram chain with 9spd shimano shifters, mech and cassette. All works happily.

Thanks for the advice, I suspected it would work, guess I was hoping someone would say there are zero problems in use.

I think ill take the plunge, 10sp Sram chainset , 9sp KMC chain, 9sp shimano shifters/mechs/casette...

from sram direct when i asked them before i bought the chainset....

"officially you should run 10spd chain with 10spd chainset, but although it might move side to side ever so slightly and therefore increase wear, i think it'll probably work fine). "

not convinced by KCNC chains though. Ridden with two newish ones that have snapped on fellow riders out of the blue.
