Aye- shimano hollowtech II has the spindle/axle connected to the drive side crank- non drive is spined with a tensioning bolt to get the bearings set right- it's basically an aheadset on it's side.
so.. assuming the cranks are just arms and the BB is spindleless. . . is it just a case of checking out gaybay and buying a spindle of the required length??
Or do MTB spindles come in different diameters too :?
The shmano ones are all the same size- ye just use more spacers if yer bb shell is 68mm- the spindle is the same length and diameter on all their cranksets, permanently fitted to the driveside:
I don't have any cranks with spindles attached.. crc don't seem to do them, I'm still hitting Google up but may need to switch to the other pc because this one's a bit slow :?
All modern shimano cranks have the spindles attached, as shown above. You can not use an external BB with a standard square taper axle, they are different diameters.

What crankset do ye want to use with an external bb?
That spindle in the ebay link is square taper, which you cannot use, or square taper cranksets with, external BBs.............if ye have an external bb already fitted on a bike, ye will have to use a hollowtech or whatever matching crankset crankset..............if ye have a square taper crankset ye want to use with an external BB, then it's not possible- ye'll have to remove the external BB and fit a sealed square taper one like a shimano UN72- tha't probably be the easiest and cheapest option.
