Do any of you Time Trial on a steel road frame?

I'm thinking of converting my Aelle road frame into a TT machine with TT bars. I already have some semi-aero rims which will do just fine. Just wanted to know the pro's and cons...

....it's since had a red Selle Italia C2 saddle and Stronglight Ironlight chainset fitted though, and currently runs blue/black Vredestein tyres.

yep
my old lady is 32 and going strong. Stopped using her as a winter bike so stuck a disc on the back. Handles Ok but weighs a ton.
Spinaccis don't count as tri bars do they ?

Except perhaps the very occassional guy on an Alan frame.

Yep

1989 Mercian, aero brake levers & clipless pedals the only aids. Just sneaked into the 25 min tens last year on it.

Our local bike club puts on a summer time trial series every year . Last year they banned all aero equipment, no aero bars ,discs, aero helmets,ect. What great fun to see everyone time trialing on their regualr road bikes. It made for a more even playing field for those who could not afford expensive TT bikes and aero equipment for only a few races a season. I rode my 1987 Bertoni and finished in about the same place I usually do. The fastest riders still won and the times were about 30-40 seconds slower over a 20k distance. Race participation was way up in the lower divisions which was the intended outcome.

My club has a "road bike challenge" event as part of the summer TT series, with bonus points towards the series competition if you race on a machine (not necessarily retro) which isn't a lo-pro and comes devoid of tri-bars, discs, etc. So even if a rider on a specialist TT machine wins overall, the points scheme favours the guys on "standard" bikes even if they roll home 15th.

Yes, in the 'Old Skool' type events and occasionally in 'opens' when I'm not to bothered about a fast time. Here's a couple of piccies from the last couple of years. Hopefully going to ride the Lincoln Whs 25 Pre-1980 bike (although they're not to specific!) at Spring Bank weekend.
