Do Aluminium frames age well?

The planes get regular crack inspection, and just consider the Valiant bomber to see what happens when it is discovered to be severe. Even current fighter aircraft are strictly limited in the G they pull in training to stop the airframes wearing out through fatigue limits.

That said, the design is much better understood today, so cracking is much rarer than the earlier frames; and I unhesitatingly climb onto my alu framed bike.

In August We flew into lake Warner, BC in a 1961 De Havilland!
Pics to prove old aluminum does exist!

Working in that bike shop for 6 months - just as many new frames crack as the old stuff, Ti included - the same old stress points, BBs, headtubes, seatubes, pivot points. No worse than anything from the previous 3 decades.

The only certainty is that bitd bike engineers pushed the limits of everything to the breaking point and beyond. Bless their buttons!

you are making it up.

A bit like that Dakota DC-3 I saw fly over the other day, or a Hurricane pass over, or that series 1 landrover or that Airbus fly ovehead, they dont exist - far too old and aluminiumy...

yeah alright clever clogs, but planes dont count coz everyone knows planes are magic and like bumble bees should not be able to fly. it is this magic that stops the aluminium cracking too.

Fact I learned it in school

Must not go near my bikes or car then, 30 year old seatpost might shatter, the lightweight wheels might fold on my Merc, they are only 25 years old though. Its cast aluminium engine block might explode at any minute, the 30 year old rims on my road bike will fold, I should have warned the buyer of my Vitus 979 that it will self destruct after the first ride, my neighbour's Landrover will suddenly crumble to dust, I just dont know where to start with replacing it all...
