DMR pedal overhaul: sealed bearings or cup/cone?

Boron

Old School Hero
Hi, need a bit of help with stripping some DMR pedals. According to the guide here https://steveukmtb.wordpress.com/dmr-v8 ... -and-cone/ it should be straightforward.

Mine look like v8... except they have a metal dust cap, not plastic. And when I get the locknut off it looks like this (pic below). I can't see a way to prise off anything; the axle spins freely and I suspect this is a sealed bearing. I don't want to go in heavy trying to prise something off that won't be prised off. What am I missing?

All help much appreciated!

Re:

That's a v12 pedal. To remove the washer is fiddly but not to difficult. Alternatively fill the pedal and screw-on metal cap with grease and tighten on. The clean grease will push the dirty grease out of the crank end of the pedal!

Ah thanks.... no markings to indicate it, but yes it is a v12. Managed to push the bearing out, but what I don't get is that on the crank side the axle looks very much like a cone but weirdly there's no loose bearings and the pedal body doesn't much look like a cup. Just one sealed unit for the outside of the pedal. Is that right? Seems weird to me not to have bearings on the cranks side.

AFAICS the previous owner may have stripped it and not rebuilt it properly? Seems the pedals are missing the second seal, a washer and a shim too. There are bearing replacement kits with all various parts but they're £20/£25 - would make more sense to buy a new set of v8s

Thanks for all the advice — yes I have found out the V12 does run on one bushing and one sealed unit. So I'm missing a bushing (and actually a rubber seal) for each pedal. The kit shown above is £25; pretty pricey for just the bits I need.

Thing that puzzles me now is the inward shield+seal is free to 'float' on the axle. It is isn't fixed to anything. The V8 appears to be the same... I came across this on another site: "However the External Shield doesn't seems to have any method of fixing to the pedal body other than grease "sticktion"."

Which, um, seems a pretty weird arrangement to me for a mid/high end pedal.

Anyone else got some DMRs that can confirm this?

:?

Re:

It has an o-ring in it and the axle has a 'dent' around it that the o-ring locates into.its a less than satisfactory method for a high-end pedal.

Re:

These are early V12s with loose ball bearings. DMR initially used Wellgo moulds. The old Shimano DX platforms was their benchmark inspiration for a sealed in bearing design. A special DMR removal tool is required plus use of a 12mm socket too. Just email DMR – they should be able give you definitive info...
