Discs aren't retro, or are they....?

Re:

To my knowledge disks have been around since the early 90s, Steve peat had one of the first hope mechanical disks on the front of his Kona hei hei in 1993. Since disks are still being used on modern bikes though, I generally dont consider them to be very retro

Yup - Shimano discs have been around nearly 40 years on bicycles and, yes, hydraulic rim brakes too.

*have read the article - a few inaccuracies but hey ho, they're published, I'm not.

Re:

I think a set on a bike popped up on eBay a couple of years back.
There is a thread or two on the forum.

That's not an advert as such, it Shimano catalogue for that year.

Here's the 1973 one and they where around earlier than that.

I've not searched the patents for around the late 60 early 70s to see if ttheyfiled any.

Re:

Well I didn't know that

It's hard to believe that hydraulic disks were about in the 70s and yet bike manufacturers were still using rim brakes 30 years later

Re:

Three good reasons it took so long for discs to become popular...
Weight, expense and complexity. Probably in that order.

The good thing about the rapid growth of the mountain bike market throughout the 90's meant that discs became a viable option as the benefits began to outweigh the negatives.

Hope did a great job, at least in the UK, of persuading many riders of the benefits of discs.
Practically everyone I know started with Hope as there first foray into disc brakes from about 1996 onwards.

As with most 'new' things in cycling, they aren't actually new but either previously unpopular or just obscure.

You have to put it in perspective.

The majority of bikes sold now still have rim brakes. As DSPaul says it was only until MTB'ing came along that there was a real incentive to use them and refine them to what we have today.

Plus you could probably argue that there was far less marketing around than todays "must have new shiny-shiny" marketeers, and therefore only new stuff with very persuasive use cases got developed and sold.
