Dilemma - Modern or Retro for Mini Ken

I want to move Miniken up to a 24inch wheeled bike at Christmas time...

Do I go for GM's lovely Zaskar 24inch...

Or do I get him a modern rig like a Hotrock A1 FSR or Scott or kona

Costs:
The Zaskar will cost roughly a total £350 to bring over here, The modern bike I can get on a rather flexible bike to work scheme so £400 new bike would cost about £250.

Any other modern suggestions welcome but I do expect him to be quite hard on his next bike.

I like the Konas

If you get a FS bike, at that price it's got to be real heavy - surely thats just what kids don't actually need. I know the Kona isn't gonna be superlight either, but it should be pretty solid. I don't trust suspension at low price points - If he's gonna hammer it then a hardtail seems a much better bet.

I can't see the Zaskar though - Can't access anything to do with ebay at work....

I reckon get him modern and let him decide if he wants a retro toy at some point in the future. Got to keep him interested and if all his mates have titchy Konas, you don't want him to be laughed at. Meanwhile, us dads are happy to be laughed at!
