Hi all

How easy is it to have set of forks re-threaded? Is it even possible??

I have been offered a Campagnolo headset (very nice) which is Italian threaded??? As my bike is a Raleigh, I'm guessing it has English threading?? Can I buy the Campy headset and have the forks altered?? Is it costly? Worth it? Am I better waiting for s aet of English ones to come along??

Sorry for all the questions, and please excuse my ignorance!!

Ps - pre-threadless headsets, why were thay all different????

Thanks

There's a very good explanation here:

And here:

Basically, I think you'll be fine - as long as you don't try to switch back afterwards! :D

As for why different manufacturers use different threading standards... who the heck knows. Same for square taper standards, bottom brackets... integrated headset bearings... everyone wants to be different. It's a real pain!!!

Headset

Thanks Hova

As expected, a very quick, and accurate response to my query. This is what makes forums, and this one in particular, brilliant!!

People happily sharing their knowledge, andputting me in the right direction.

Thanks agin. :)

Further confusion

Hi (again)

What if I mis-read the e-masil, and it's actually a French threasing??? Can anything be done???

Thanks

Hmmmm... I think that would be unlikely... Haven't heard of a french threaded campy headset before (but I could be wrong)... If its french threaded, you'll be able to tell right away that it doesn't fit! :)

Hope that helps...

Raleigh threading is 26 TPI English fork threading is 24 TPI.

Make sure what you have before you go changing things.

Yes, you're absolutely right!!!!!
Could've been a huuuuge mistake...

Read this: http://sheldonbrown.com/raleigh26.html

Buggger. I didn't realise this - what a pain... I guess you won't be able to use that campy headset after all, thejackal... :(

It's only older & low-end Raleighs that have the awkward sizing - anything halfway decent & post-mid 70's *should* be ISO/English, I believe. Definitely worth checking before splashing out though...
