How many versions of the x-rays were there? I have a set of "clears" on my rig that I had built up in 95 which are cracked and I am looking to replace. Which look like these:

I was told there were later "smoked" versions that were more durable, and I found images like these to begin my hunt:

I picked up a set from ebay and from the pics it looked "smoked" but from the small pic the seller posted it didn't look quite the same but I couldn't tell for sure. I showed the seller the "smoked" pic above, he said his were "clears". But when I got them today, they are not clear, but they also do not look like the "smoked" version above.

As you can see, they do look "smoked", however the logo is completely different, as well the inside plastic parts are white, as opposed to black in both the "clears" and "smoked".

I'm wondering if I should install these and would like to know if these are in fact more durable than the clears. I have Scott AT2-LF bar and might become a difficult chore uninstalling and re-installing the shifters.

I started off with the clear ones in 1995, they were crystal clear and you could see perfectly through them

I cracked them at the elbow in early 96 but as I was about to throw them away I called the UK disty and they told me they had changed the plastic as the clears were too prone to cracking - handy that

I took them to Bike 96 in April of the same year and Gripshift / SRAM kindly replaced them with smoked versions for free.

These did not have the grafix that your pics show but did have the SRT 800 XRay written in White as in the 1st photo of the clears.

I think your photos show later models, mine currently reside on a C-16R that I sold in 2003 (Stupidly)

I've just picked up a set from here of hte smoked ones so I'll see what they look like when they appear and post a photo

My cases were replaced under warranty as well (in fact, I bought some cracked ones S/H and they replaced those too!)
The lower of those pictured are deffo smoked and certainly more durable - I think they called it 'Gorillamin'

Found my catalogue yesterday

The clears are 95 - from the catalogue

Smoked with no decals have to assume were 96

Smoked as in the bottom pic were 97's - from the catalogue

Can get you a scan of the two of them if you want - interesting compatability charts

The middle smoked pair has decals, that you can peel off. At least that's what they look like from pictures I've seen. The bottom set that I already have are actually painted on logos.

Please post scans, that would be great. Now I'm very curious since you mention a compatibility charts. I hope that's not gonna a be an issue for me when I install them!
