difference between Control Tech vs Answer Atac quill stem

cap looks to be the original, as it fits perfectly to the stem. but having bought it 2nd hand i wouldn't know.

took a quick look inside and it's clean and doesn't look to have been modified. doesn't seem like a bolt would fit properly inside, so it looks like the bolt should be on the top cap.

From what I've been able to find out it seems yours is an origional ,,they then recessed the wedge bolt to save weight and then finally made it front loading,yuk!

i just took another look at the stem, and technically, if i had the same bolt i currently have but shorter, i could have the bolt recessed inside. structurally though, i'm not too sure how strong it is in there and if it would hold.

However I've been told it should have a rubber/plastic top cap, but what I have is an silver alloy cap. Looking around the forums I noticed that the Answer Atac stem looks to almost identical to a Control Tech stem, and they all seem to have the alloy top cap.

As did I, the one I just bought has a recessed bolt inside the stem AND missing any type of plastic cap. I'll drop you a note if I find any alternatives.

Hi Rich,

Would greatly appreciate it if you find a stem cap replacement. The one I'm using for the mongoose is fine, but i have another NOS stem which is missing the cap.
