Is it worth holding out for the SL's? How rare are the FSX? Do any have better damping?

SO many questions!

if we're talking old school judys then the differences are as follows:

Judy SL has Ti bolts on fork and crown, an Alu ahead steerer, a yellow paint job. Costs a load more than XC

Judy FSX have carbon lower legs and a CNCed brace that breaks. Costs a little bit more than SL

Other than that there is no difference.

Couldnt tell you about the more recent ones though.

The SL had an aluminiun steerer and no bolts on the crown to shed weight.
The newer two tone (black and yellow) one had a red, easier to use adjustment knob for the dampening.
I don't think there was any difference in the dampening between the SL and the XC as they both used the same 'Judy' cartridge.
Something to note though - alot of people had problems the the earlier Judy carts as they were made of plastic and could easily corrode and burst.

Only the 'model year' really altered the internals of these things. SL was just a lightened version of the XC.

An 'SL' steerer/crown for the early JUDY before the steerer/crown became bonded to the legs would save you ~100g at a length of 200mm
Though in 1995 the travel was different. XC was 50mm and SL was ~10mm more. Both where the same after that and the cartridge/dummy leg could be changed to alter the travel anywhere.
