I'm starting to sound like a scratched record on these, but I wouldn't use them again unless I was really stuck. You get what you pay for, cheap crap

I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience with them, it seems to have cut deep, however I have never had a problem with them and have used them for years, they are significantly better quality for the money than Grafton or Crystal Designs levers, in my experience of course.

Of course you're right. Pretty much all shimano levers weigh a lot more, so there is no comparison

Compared to SLR Plus servowave there is no competition.

I have used them since 91 as shimano 733's substitutes: they works great and they are very light, also with not slippery gum integrated on levèrs. They are not sophisticated levers, but they do their job.
Consider that Gary Klein used them on his top catalog bike, the tuned Superlite version.

If you are searching for some SS5 MkII and don't care about rebadging, look for some Cannodale Coda levers. The early ones are SS5 MkIIs and they are usually cheap on ebay. The ones that look like SS5 MkII levers really are.

Those SS5s look really nice. I dropped my shimano 'pig-ironed' Shimano combined levers & shifters like a sack of **** as soon as I saw the Dia Compe stuff – it was well trick bitd! I got the SS7s with the 986 cantis around 1992/3 and they've been in continuous use on the same bike for around 24 years. That's testament – quality kit. The springs on the cantis have just gone (looking for replacements) so have upgraded to Avid Digit V-brakes – the SS7s seem to work well with the Avids.

I remember them being in the 'light but flexy' camp and the lever shape was a bit meh. I prefer Suntour XC Pro out of the 'normal' levers from BITD. Graftons and the like seemed a bit of a joke.
