deore reach problem, and my first brush paint job.

Hi Guys

I have just brush painted avanti barracuda stx. It was a full STX bike with rockshox q5's when I got it. Now it is a mix and match of bits I could scrape together.

I am very happy with the paint but can see it will take a loooonnnng time to harden up. It is a rustoleum paint, I used a silver tip whooster brush.

So now for the problems

1) I ordered shifter cables from deal extreme, won't be doing that again. Not sure what the cables are but they are thinner than brakes, thicker than shifters and have a undersized brake type head. You can see my attempt to use the cable for shifting in one of the pics.

2)I have fitted a deore front mech (with a plastic shim under it). It does not seem to have enough reach to go out to the largest cog (48 ). I have checked the screws. I do not think the bb is long.

I am bound to be making a simple mistake, any one know what it is?

Thanks for any advice.

Firstly ditch the cables, they are clearly not for shifters. Send them back if you can. This could also be the cause of your shifting problems.

As for the front mech; check that it's not catching anywhere else. From your photo I can see that it's nowhere near full extension.
Also, is that the position of your front shifter in relation to the front mech?
The shifter has alot more forward throw and resulting cable pull to give.

I'd also look at the cable routing into the front mech. Those Deore mechs are dual pull meaning that they can accommodate a cable coming from above or below.
It may be that you've used the wrong cable clamping configuration.

As above, experiment with cable clamping for that front mech - it should be fine with a thumbshifter.

If you have a Wilkinsons or ASDA Superstore nearby, they have very cheap cables on sale.

From here it looks like the front shifter is hitting the brake lever, it might want to come more inboard,

All sorted, it was cable routing, I had the cable running down, under and back around. Changed that to a direct line straight down and it worked fine.

Now it is just a matter of waiting for the paint to harden up enough to put the seat clamp on.

Thanks
