There are plenty of short term jobs in Europe you don't need language skills for, fruit picking just about everywhere, grapes in France and there is always work where the brits go on holiday.

I'm crap at languages and I've got work in Denmark, Italy, France and Austria.

A lot of the issues people seem to have with EU people working here are to do with the one doing very menial work, such as fruit picking, yet its not something the brits seem to want to do.

I'm originally a linguist and have had no problems branching out of the UK...

Which sort of proves the point in that article.

However, I also have some experience teaching languages in the UK secondary school system and all I could say at the time was ... "rats, sinking ships, oh... look at my long hairless tail, SWIM!"

Which I still have a slightly guilty conscience about.

I have travelled much throughout Europe but at very little cost

I use a web site called workaway...it's like someone needs help building an eco centre in say italy or a retreat in spain..you volunteer a few days work and they pay for your board and lodging.

Seen some great places almost buckshee and real country not the touristy bits

wow thats awesome!
i guess you have to pay for travel there though? but still cheap as possible i see 8)
how did you find the language barriers though? if any?

Yup you have to pay your own travel there and back .. The only thing that's free is the board and lodging

Normally I work in the uk for 3 months to fund it then offski... This is the first year i've been in the uk a whole year because my only child is expecting her first daughter, my first grandchild within the next two weeks

Language... Thankfully most of Europe speaks good English and those that don't .. Well as long as you are respectful, try to speak some of the native tongue then they humour you but generally get on and it's great to try

Some of the holiday companies will fly you there and back, put you up for the summer and then fly you home afterwards for a summers work.

The money is rubbish, but plenty to live on.

These are alright if you have no ties or anything but when you got commitments its not a plausible option unless you are making decent money.

I looked for something today for the 1st time in ages as work has dried up again so was looking for something to tick over on in the short term till work picks up again for the last 4 days in liverpool a total of 30 jobs have been posted and only 1 is suitable for me.

Of course your right comp

I have no mortgage, credit cards, overdraft, hp or dependent children

Which sounds idyllic, until I get to an age where I cannot travel anymore then I will have nothing..until then I intend to enjoy myself

As to jobs... My longest was as a senior manager for a multiple national company where projects of £300 million were the norm...2 weeks ago I was cleaning cars that people had died in before the cars were auctioned for parts/repair or scrap... Months before I was cleaning cesspits... The pound in my pocket doesn't care how it gets there
