Degreaseing

There is enough organic solvent in GT-85 or WD-40 for it to soften up the gunk and clean it up nicely.

I’ve used lots of things - diesel, white spirit, wd-40 in a gallon container, branded degreaser. The one I’ve found that isn’t necessarily the best but is the most versatile is a G101 type cleaner. As it’s water based seems a lot less harsh/stinky than anything solvent based. It’s basically like a super concentrated Flash lemon that you dilute to whatever you are cleaning. I’ve used it at 50% dilution to degrease stuff like cassettes, using hot water to dilute speeds it up. Then down to 10 to 20% to clean anything from car upholstery, spillages on the carpet, even whitened up my wife’s trainers! When using on metal does need a spray and wipe of wd40 or light oil after.

Cheers guys I give that screw fix degrease ago we actually have one we're I live about the only thing that and b and q I just tried vinegar on rust brought the bolts up great which were steel but I also put in a top bit of a headset that had rust on it from the bearing didn't do much it was aluminium still though it would have took it off as it was transfered rust I just about to give them a rub with toothbrush hot soapy water

If it is aluminium, it is most likely the aluminium oxide coating that is stained by the rust. Hot soapy water might do the trick, but might not. There are a variety of cleaners/polishers for Aluminium. Autosol and Mothers are the two that I use. Basically a white paste that you rub on and polish off.

Degreaser can be used on Aluminium too, but make sure you dilute it as it will oxidise the metal if it is too strong, or left on too long. (Don't ask me how I know 😄 ) You'll probably need to polish it afterwards with Autosol or Mothers anyway.
