Decent V brakes

Re:

For me you can't go wrong with XT M739 or XTR M950. As LGF says, get V's set up right and they are bombproof and do the job.

Thanks for the good advice.

I've got a couple of pairs of M739 levers so I'm OK on that score. I think I'll invest a bit more time in getting the M739 v's set up and just get some cheapish deore or avid v brakes for the kiddy bike.

So, any advice for when your M739 v brakes do this:

I took them apart to add some shims to the parallel pivot and discovered that the main pivot and spring mechanism has come apart and I can't get it to stay back on. Even when I try to press it back together in the vice it just comes off again.

I think this is the source of the braking problems. when they are mounted you can move the arms back and forth a lot.

Fixable or just move on and get something else?

Slackboy,

I can't see your image, but I'm guessing your lower end bushing/spring base has come disassembled.

Originally, the bushing had 4 protrusions from its end that engaged teh spring base. They were a snug fit and would hold together if pressed together with strong finger pressure. They are sometimes rather looser than that.

Re-assemble them, and hold them together while you set them on teh stud, and run in the screw. Once the screw is run in, but not snug, pull the spring out away from the wheel, and hold it there while tightening the screw. It'll be fine then, and work as ever. No biggy.

Apologies if I've guessed wrong.

J
