Decal removal

Hi guys

Got to remove my decals from a frame and send them to someone for colour matching.

Is there a simple way to do this without damaging them too much?

Not worried about scratching frame etc as that’ll be re sprayed

You can try to heat them gently and peel them off to save them. Thats the way to go and thats basically the only way.

Heat with a hairdryer - slowly and from a distance or it could blister the decal. Put the frame somewhere warm to start with to raise it's ambient temperature. Dependent on the decal could try some dental floss underneath if you can get a purchase by lifting a section.

As above. A little white spirit can help as you go along. The decals can get quite gummy as the heat releases them.

What about the clear coat? Heating up still work?

I’m not sure heat will do much to the clear coat if they’re lacquered in. Possibly some thinners applied sparingly to try and remove it but it could damage the decal underneath.

I used some cheap paint and varnish remover from screwfix recently, it removed the clear coat from a 95 P7 very well.
