DCD / ging chain devices. a little help please

I have often wondered about dcd or ging type chain devices on geared bikes. just how do they work with a mobile chainline? surely they are setup for a specific chainline so will only work efficiently in a handful of gears or is there a way of setting them up with some lateral float to keep the chain up & working through the entire range of gears?

the reason i ask is i've had one in the cupboard for a couple of years, bought for a SS project & never used & nobody has shown any interest in it so I'm thinking i may as well kill off its NOS-ness and try it on my latest project (where it wouldn't actually look out of place!).

The DCD has enough width on the roller that the chain could find it's own line. FWIW, I had fewer problems with the chain falling off with the DCD than without.

what would happen in the case of a ging with a jockey fitted?

The Ging has a pivot that allows it to rotate and chase the chain throughout the gears.

It allowed me to go run a road chainset on a Zaskar without a flappy chain.

and so could well be my early full susser running a big-ish outer ring chain slap solver?!

edit: i've never properly examined the ging (only enough to realise the SS chain i had wouldn't fit through it) does it clamp tight onto the stay & have a lower section that rotates / pivots off the bottom of clamp? if so - how do i know where to set it on the stay?

I assume run big ring to small & small to big & see where the chainline crossover point is?
