Today I paid a modest amount of pocket money for a 1989 Dawes Quest 19" lugged 531 in yellow & pink with full MT62 groupset. Paint is ropey, parts are covered in oily muck but cleaning up nicely, nothing is stuck although it doesn't look very cared-for. Rims are mega-wide Alesa in black & appear to have little wear to sidewalls. Deore biopace cranks are in good shape. Thumbies have lost their stickers, is someone reproducing those? Only junk parts so far are seat, tyres & chain.
Planning to split it for parts once everything is cleaned up but will post a pic first in case anyone is keen to take the whole bike off my hands.

Re:

I would love to see this mate. One of the first bikes I bought off here was a Dawes escape, which I think is the same as this but made from r500. Love this lines of Dawes in the same way I love the Peugeot snake range. Perfect retro bikes

Re: Dawes

Will do some more work on it tomorrow then take pics.

Yes Adrian, be great to get a local Retrobike ride in soon. Off-road conditions bit horrendous at present though. Will get back to you on that

Re: Dawes - pics.

Well, after a day's fettling here it is - groupset parts all in great shape apart from scruffy thumbies, wheels excellent, I just threw on some tyres & a seat for sake of completeness.
Bars & stem scruffy also, bars are 600mm steel, stem is 130mm, grips original I think.
Shame about the paint, there are a few sections in great shape but these are punctuated by numerous big rusty scabs. Steel isn't too far gone underneath though & no dents.
There's a dealer sticker on the down tube - Les's Discount Cycles of Canvey Island.
With 15 bikes & 4 m/cycles in the garage already I don't intend to keep this. Will be parting it out on here soon but if anyone wants to discuss purchase of the whole bike do pm me, I think it deserves to be preserved whole.

Re:

Thanks, that's a lovely blast of retro for me.

As honest as the day is long and to think it came off the tip. Got to be someone out there than can cherish this beaut

Re:

Hope so - or it gets split. Wicked colours but paint does need attention. Those rims are so wide they could be modern & the slack frame angles.

I had the 501 version a few steps down the foodchain which was a carboot rescue. Same paint but not as good quality frame as yours. I quite miss its 300LX simplicity.

*those hubs and rims are really nice. Yes, wide but quite tough.

I really like that colour scheme. Seem to remember a couple of dawes bikes catching my eye as a youth. Wasn't there a kick back, fat chance or something along those lines?
