Dawes 'Lightweight' Model? I.D Help

Leon C

Retro Newbie
Picked this up earlier for £50 but as you can see the Model Decal is missing, it was bought like this previously so no info forthcoming there, plus it has upgrades so not sure what is original!

I'm asking for curiosity and may put the Decal back on if I can get an I.D, once cleaned up, although it is roadworthy as is, he also threw in a pair of Mavic Ergoride Shoes, Helmet, the original box for the Seat with Leather conditioner, Box/Instructions for the Computer which was very generous of him and for me a sign of someone who cares for their gear.

I would like matching wheels and the Mavic feels more original so any input in that direction would be nice.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, that’s a great buy. It all looks original apart from the stem, seatpost, saddle and as you say, the front wheel. That saddle is very nice so a rather good upgrade from what the original would have been.

The front wheel is a very common Mavic model, so you should be able to find a decent one on eBay for not much money (or you could post a wanted thread in the road-wanted section). As it’s the front wheel you don’t need to worry about what hub it has, as long as the rim is the same.

If the reynolds decal is to be believed that’s a nice lightweight 531 tubing set in competition flavor so it quality frame wise.

It’s a Dawes Impulse. Here’s another example:

Here’s the 1991 catalogue, when it had a slightly different paint job, so yours is a few years earlier, I think.

Thank you so much, I was going to look at some catalogues today so you kindly saved me the job, and personally think I would have removed some myself as the different typefaces does make it look 'messy' IMHO but nice to know what I'm working towards.

I did look at the 1990 Catalogue and it's a completely different colour scheme and it's not in the 86 Catalogue so narrows it down, I did see one tagged as 89 so close, although I did notice both wheels have been changed ;) But for now I'll use as is and gradually, as budget allows, put similar black rims on as was originally.

Actually, I just noticed the brakes are also slightly more modern (1996) replacements for the originals - but they will be better, so I'd keep those unless you really want it to be 100% catalogue correct. Also, it wasn't unusual with the bigger brands for the actual bikes that ended up in shops to be slightly different specs to the catalogue, anyway.

I'd like it to be close, at least in looks as never going to find original Rims in good nick in my available funds although there's a front one on EB at the moment for £50 without postage but skint for bike parts right now, I'll put some decals back on but my personal preference is atm, just an 'Impulse' one and a Dawes one on the seat tube, I like simple.

The brakes are great and have a little adjuster on the side so easier to take the wheel off, neat, there's a little judder on the front one but the pads are wonky so will reset them and see.

Appreciate your interest.
