Dawes Galaxy (1983 ish)

Hi all,
Thought I'd show you my Galaxy that I picked up from the Bay a few months ago for around £60 for the whole bike.
All the parts came off the frame without too much trouble, which is always a bonus!
531 tubing (or so the stickers said so!) Paint was bad, decals worn out, couple of dinks that I silver soldered (they were nothing structual)
Basically, I nitromored & sanded the frame to death, bead blasted & my mate powdercoated it for me.
I picked up a new headset that I've fitted (it was a JIS which is 30.0 cups & 27.0 fork race.) The old plastic pipe over the steerer tube worked a treat to get the race installed :D
I have a new Tange BB to fit. The rest of the Suntour kit came up OK, so will use that.
The freewheel & chain also seem OK.
Stripped, polished & rebuilt the front wheel as the spokes were rusted badly, just need to do the same to the rear now!

I don't really want to cut the steerer tube down, so used some of the old 1" spacers from the old headset, but they're a bit wide, so if anyone knows where I can get some narrow ones from, I'd appreciate the advice.
Anyway, here's the before & very basic after.
Would anyone be interested in photos as & when I've completed "the next bit?"

Richard :D

Very nice, have these got 700c wheels? Are the forks 531 to?

Hi,
No the wheels are 27x 1 1/4, weinmann rims, mallard 36 h hubs. I will be starting the rebuilding of the front wheel hopefully this week. Got nothing done on it today as been in the garden all day 8)
Yes the forks are reynolds 531. It stripped down real easy & looks good in white I think.
I have bought some cheap long drop brake levers to put on in case at some point I change to 700c wheels, which correct me if I'm wrong are about 5mm diameter smaller than 27x 1 1/4.

A couple of updates as I've had some time this weekend.
The front & rear mech & down tube shifters have been part cleaned (I'll do some more on them very soon)
Front wheel stripped. Rim was rubbed down with a kitchen scourer & fine wire wool, then autosol magic.
Hub stripped, degreased & bearing replaced. The cones were OK, so will go with them.
Laced pretty much as they were... 3 cross. I need to true the wheel now. :D
