Dawes Edge - the sum of its parts

Must be said, the bike is a BLAST!
Of course selling all the old stuff you stripped off is easy, it's making the Edge in its new incarnation desirable, and getting enough money for it to sell at a profit.

Target price is £495...
Which is a bargain.
(It should be possible to sell it for £595, but the market is flooded, so let's be realistic)

Retail cost of parts,
mostly gc used:
£370

So that leaves £125 for the modified frame.
I can go with that🤠

... after I've been for a spin through the urban jungle...😛
Nice save Tom, one of the rare occasions where everyone wins👍

That's not bad going that mate if my maths are right haha is that a £200 profit off everything and selling the bike is pure profit as well keep up the good work wish I had a bike shop like yours near mine all we got is Halfords waste of time except innertubes

Many components have been put back into use already - out there being ridden😃

So the original parts are all sold on
Some through the shop,
some through retrobike,
some through ebay.

Here's the cost breakdown:
My bid of £120 won the bike.

Fork 40
wheels 100
Tyres 30
saddle 15
Pedals 10
Barends 10
Stem 32
Hanger 14
Bar 10
Stis 135
Grips 18
Headset 25
Bb 22
F mech £25
R mech £30
Ch.set 130
Cantis 65
Canti bolts 18
Qrs 20

Total £750

That's a little more than I was expecting
- my gut feeling was £600 -

I think it was the little bits and pieces people need or want but are a bit scarce - 90s tyres, grips, ti components, that pulled it up a little.

Of course I have to pay VAT on all that, so that's about £130 to help pay for hospitals, the police, social housing, you know.👍

Oh and to help pay to repurpose this lovely 653 frame for a modern audience!
Great result even including your time . More power to you .

What a great thread and an interesting bike to begin with 👍 Some top work gone on 😍

Funny last night while being a bit ..... erm ...... overly tipsy was wondering why we don't see so many retro mods. Actually showing the financials is probably a bit taboo here (?) but for sure many people here including myself keep an eye on budget, what can be kept, what can be sold off, other strip and flip bikes to support the project etc.

Was also thinking just actually how far in time back or forth can a retro mod go? Dunno why but I came out with +/- 20 year from frame date.

Something else also struck me. It's more often the frame / chassis is the old part with newer parts and it's very rare to see it done the other way around ie. hanging old parts of a much newer frame.

Now ...... what do we do with all those old road bikes? 🤪

Farewell, Edgy.
An 853 disc hybrid at £515 😍

£1265 total income (inc Vat)
£550 costs.

(Sounds good,
but it costs £2/minute to keep the shop open!)

And quite a few hours spent:
collecting,
testriding,
selling,
thinking,
brazing,
building,
Test riding
Selling.

It's been a lot of fun, and now you are ready to head back out onto the road to be used properly.

Given this bike was so little used from new
(1 pair of pads original)...

a race- level mtb from 1993,

But by 95 you would expect a suspension fork and v- brakes, so unlikely on the start line!
(Simmer down there or ill call security😉)

but it was too expensive to pass straight down to your nephew who wanted a bike for his paper round!

I'm hoping it's going to get a lot more use in its new 27five disc incarnation🤞

It seems a lot more Futureproof.

The End.
