Dawes Edge - the sum of its parts

Building under way: 20250531_123136.webp
650s, 1x, hydro discs.
We are trying to make a bike that's cool and funky and people want to buy -
get it back out there,
working,
being used
- not languishing at the back of someone's shed, unused behind a half dozen more interesting bikes.

I'll tot up the build bill and see what it's costing.

Getting there, testrideable😃

Nice job bike workshop very good what you do and to document I have no problem with it at all it's the other way that bothers me people selling cheaper on here then someone selling if for more on eBay just greed I seen someone do it with headsets just wrong keep up the good work

Many components have been put back into use already - out there being ridden😃

So the original parts are all sold on
Some through the shop,
some through retrobike,
some through ebay.

Here's the cost breakdown:
My bid of £120 won the bike.
... and I don't mean I got it off
the tax-dodging guitarist😉

Hammer price £120, my absentee bid, sight unseen excluding a single photo🤣
Any offers as to the parts value?
I'm feeling comfortable, maybe I'm wrong?

Fork 40
wheels 100

Pedals 10
Barends 10
Stem 32
Hanger 14

F mech £25
R mech £30
Ch.set 130
Cantis 65
Canti bolts 18
Qrs 20

Total £750

That's a little more than I was expecting
- my gut feeling was £600 -

I think it was the little bits and pieces people need or want but are a bit scarce - 90s tyres, grips, ti components, that pulled it up a little.

Of course I have to pay VAT on all that, so that's about £130 to help pay for hospitals, the police, social housing, you know.👍

Oh and to help pay to repurpose this lovely 653 frame for a modern audience!

Rock and Roll
It's great to ride! I thought dragging its mtb race heritage into the 21st century might make it twitchy or alarming but...View attachment 967123
Yet again I'm reminded that mtb geometry at the tail end of the rigid period is perfect for an all purpose bike that's fun to ride😍
Love the build and the smile on your face says it all! Really nice work mate!!

Must be said, the bike is a BLAST!
Of course selling all the old stuff you stripped off is easy, it's making the Edge in its new incarnation desirable, and getting enough money for it to sell at a profit.

Target price is £495...
Which is a bargain.
(It should be possible to sell it for £595, but the market is flooded, so let's be realistic)

Retail cost of parts,
mostly gc used:
£370

So that leaves £125 for the modified frame.
I can go with that🤠

... after I've been for a spin through the urban jungle...😛
