Just fiddling around with the newly acquired GT Palomar frame that I bought off Tel recently... it's cleaned up nicely and my favourite thing about the 'sturdy' little frame is the sticker that proudly states:
4130 cr-mo seat tube
8)

Anyway, my questions: can anyone date this frame from it's use of Altus A20 groupset (poss non original), 1 1/8" head tube, 135mm dropouts and frame number - KA18A2474. My guess was 1993 based on the Altus kit it came with, but is now '98 based on Bikepedia:

Regardless - it's not going to be completely original anyway!

Next up, I'm demo'ing brake cable routing under top tube through two pipes and down to the yoke... I assume I have got this correct? Should there also be a little bit of cable outer (like you get to protect inner cables where exposed) around my inner:

yup cable outer

if your going with V's dont run it thru the second guide
the rear brake needs all the help it can get on those

running gear cable instead of brake cable helps a bit too

cable outer like the type I mentioned before? I did consider bypassing the second guide and running v brake but wouldn't that mean running outer cable all the way from the lever unless I drill out the cable guide at front end of top tube?

 solution found! Deep in a box of used outer cables I've found a brake outer with a step-down ferrule attched to one end. So I can run v-brakes with inner going into the pipe guide and out of it via the stepped ferrule as it just fits inside! :D

Here is the cable routing on my 94 Karakoram, which I am running LX V's on for the moment. Cantis will follow, to keep it period correct.

1) Brake cable outer routes the cable straight down to the V's.

2) Canti guide not it use.

However, when using cantis you'll need to use a cable outer to route the cable from point 1) to 2) otherwise the bare cable will eventually hacksaw through your frame!

here's a pic of the v-brake solution - just need to cut cable down once rear wheel and pads are ready and in place. Step down ferrule (setp up in this case) from long first guide which bypasses second shorter guide and into the noodle. Pic shows ferrule not actually pushed into place obviously - and noodle needs more curve - but you get the idea. The outer cable is labeled Shimano SIS but is wound like a brake cable so should work fine

thats it fella

the origonal cantis would have a sleeve over the inner from the t/t rear
mount ,thru the s/t mount
do the catalouge thing in the archive think they show this set up in there
some years (92/3 ish )

you might find even with v's that the brakes a bit "squashy"
