Cytec - would it get me a decent job/ income

As far as I'm aware to work as a tool monkey the industry requires that you have to be cytech quallified. or a similar

Been looking at doing this either this year or defo by the end of next year.

Not sure about wages though.

Would quite like to here other peoples thoughts on this to.

im cytech level3 and trust me when i say dosn't matter what qual's you have a bike shop will only pay minimum wage and if you own said shop you need a large some of money to make a small sum of money in the cycle trade hence why im now offshore again as the pay is so much better  plus cytech level 2 and 3 are very expencive and you need to be in the trade to go the course with a minimum of 16hrs a week working in the shop its a right pain in the arse for what you'll get

but if you want to do il give you any help you need mate that i can give  :D

As a bike shop owner/mechanic of my aquaintance said "There's no money in bikes" and as a result bikes were just one of the numerous pies he had his fingers in

Still didn't save him, one night he did a bunk and was never seen again, his creditors were after him and I dont think they were the sympathetic kind.

However LGF, a taxi driver who also fixed bikes etc might be a career combo that could work

it would help you get a job in a bike shop over someone who hasn't got the qualification but the wages are very poor generally, the best way is to get the job then the shop pays for the qualification but it will take time, i am cytec level 2 but i don't think i learnt anything i didn't already know but i had been in the trade 10 years when the cytec stuff came out.

i was told that i could pay for it myself if i wanted to continue with it though. i would like to do the suspension section, i can set anything up to get the best out of it but i haven't done much stripping down and maintainance of forks/shocks though.

and that is a "good" wage bike shop wise, that's more than most because it's a manager job, so i'd assume they have several mechanics to manage.

i think london tends to have the best pay but then living, commuting or working in london the wages are higher because the cost of living is higher unless you are willing to live in a horrible place.

Bloody hell. I was well over double that plus pension with the same job title and 2 hours less a week.

Can see why CRC can keep their prices so low!

For the sake off a few hundred ££ its a qualification that you could fall back on iff ever required

I never wanted to be a electrician but once i got my ticket it was always there and iff i changed career and didn't like it i still had a qualification

Good cycle mechanics ( i mean good ones ) are hard to find in shop. i know off less than 10 id trust with my bike in the 11yrs i spent in cycle shops. All the good ones always seemed ambitious and left the trade to peruse other things.

sell some stuff you'd never use and go for it .
