Cyclocross chainset on a MTB

I had a Gossamer CX double with 36-46 om my Heckler with no issues that I can remember. Frankenbike build that worked remarkably well for fast XC riding:

My commuter uses a 48/34t chainset with no issues what so ever.

I had considered running a road chainset on a mtb with this set up. (well 48, 36 was the smallest outer and middle I could find in 130bcd)

I had presumed that if the cranks / rings etc didnt clear the chain stay you could install a longer BB axle to compensate.

Is that off the mark?

As above, I have one on my road commuter based on an old Klein Attitude frame. Works well with no probs.

how weird. probably something to do with being a e-stay style frame. on my ridgind steel frame the gossomer hit the chain stays

Is it to up the gearing? If so consider a pre compact (mtb) chainset I.E one with a 110mm BCD.

Easier if you're running square taper - I had an Octalink on the Kilauea in the above pic and the longest axle didn't quite clear the chainstay. A gentle application of the rubber covered handle of my claw hammer sorted that one...

Was great to see the looks on the faces of the Camb's Uni Roadies when the oike on the mountain bike used to tag along for a few miles...

Thanks for all the replies! Looks like it can be done then. I use a square taper BB, and I was hoping to put a double chainset on. Its mainly to make my bike more efficient on roads as I hardly ride off now.

Something else would the triple XT shifter still work on a double chainset???

Thanks again

I used to run a road crankset on my old Muddy Fox when I used it to commute, like We are Stevo said the look on some people's faces when I overtook/kept up.

On the basis that that's what's fitted in the pic of my bike (my daughters' now actually...) above - yes 8)
