Cycle to work scheme dishonesty

We agree on your last point. As for the other, I can see your view and maybe i'm slightly less overs to the idea of people using it other than what the rules set out, but I still wouldn't use the scheme unless I was using it for it's purpose because IMO I do believe it was brought in more for reducing (or being seen to try and reduce) congestion rather than boosting the cycle industry or making people healthier. Maybe just splitting hairs.

Is this a thread about how honest or dishonest ... well unless you are a MP then you always have the middle ground.

I don't see a problem with people expanding there current range with Cycle schemes and not riding to work if not practical and use a bike for the weekend ... the reduced cost to the NHS for somebody health is a greater investment.

If you only buy the bike to sell on is not the spirit but then again somebody may get a cheap bike again and back to the health benefit

And while you feel sorry for the tax man try this little one out.
My company pays for me to private health care I get taxed extra for this, I had 2 back Op's last year which where paid for privately costing around 16k
So the NHS had to pay nothing !!
So the NHS has there stamp the tax man has his money from me talking about paying for it twice !!!!

FWIW, I agree completely with your standpoint on the scheme.

Unfortunately, there's an ever increasing degree of "Me, me, me..." in society today, where it seems society has evolved into many taking what they can, largely, because they can.

And to be equitable to that position, I'm not as charitable as you've been about the politicians. Not that I don't get what you're saying, and not that I believe that they should all be in the dock, merely that many seemed to take what they could, rather than what they should. That and the belief that were they normal people, playing fast and loose with expenses with normal companies, and found out, they'd almost certainly have lost their job, and be lucky not to be facing charges (as 2 or 3 are).

To be clear, I believe that they got off lightly / favourably, compared with (hypothetically) the average Joe, because of the position or status. And not that I don't see your point about the, somewhat unofficial, usage of their expenses system, as a means of providing adequate compensation, but all the same, if that's what was needed, it sould have been done better, or been reformed in such a way as it would be palatable to the general public - which I think was most peoples' dismay - 1) it was with public money, on public bidding (so to speak) and 2) the belief that they got favourable treatment when found out.

As I'm inferring from your position, I think there's some whiff of hypocrisy that people are seeing this as fair game, whilst baying for blood over the MP's expenses scandal, if there's context for people "abusing" the cycle-to-work scheme, then surely there's context for the MPs.

I have been tempted to do what everyone else does and pass on the ticket in the past but haven't yet.
Our nearest major town (Colchester), in at least 1 car park, you have to input your car reg number to the ticket machine and the ticket is printed with that info..

Greed.. imo..

The worst bit about the scheme is that our next window opens for a month in September and that'll be a few months too early to order a 2011 Orange 5.

couldnt you get somthing to that value and keep it in the box for resale to get the orange? bit unorthodox but you get what you want

You could in theory ... If in good terms with your LBS do the scheme redeem the voucher, the shop claims the voucher and credit you with the value till the new bike is out

More grey area !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would help if you are a MP

It never occurred to me that people would just get a cheap bike with no intention of using it , regardless being used for work or not . Cheeky buggers .

If you cycle I see no bad in buying a cheap bike whatever the use it will get . Maybe less so if you live 50 miles from work but even if you buy something nice with no intention of taking it to work you probably have other bikes that you will .

There's a guy who comes into the shop often . He rides to work everyday and loves it , he often goes for a longer ride when he finishes . He does it all on a very well used Apollo and when his work gets the scheme he will be buying a nice bike to use for the enjoyment of cycling . He will continue to use the old Apollo for work and while it's not really in the rules I see no problem with it whatsoever . A bike will get him to work , it wont be the bike bought on the scheme but there will be a bike getting him to work . I see it like a nice pat on the back for doing it already .
