Cutting & Bleeding Hs33 Hose

I need to cut and bleed my hs33 hose (way too long), and need a little advice. I have watched the magura videos but am a little unclear on the following points:

Do i need to buy a hose cutter? @ £9.99 ...or can i get away with a stanley? (new blade of course)

When bleeding, Magura says that the lever should be 20 Deg angle - but i have the pre 2005 lever. Do i face it vertically up to the sky? ..stop the air getting trapped?

I'm looking to buy one of the magura rim service kits but was wondering what the difference between the Service Kit & the Mini Service Kit?

hi you can deffo use a new stanley blade.but you may have to trim it straight as it might cut at a slight angle............not sure what's in the kits these days

yes you can use a sharp stanley blade to cut the black Magura hose, it's only plastic.
Just make sure the point you're filling it up at is the highest point of the system, that way you'll avoid getting air in the system, about a 20degree angle is probably about right.
You'll need the syringe and connector and some Magura Blood (oil), as well as a new olive to go on the freshly cut hose when you re-connect it. The olive can be a bitch to get on the hose, I find a gentle tweak with some pliers can help.

I searched high & low for a rim-brake service kit without joy, in the end I bought a disc-brake service kit which has all the bits you need anyway (and several you don't), but a bit more of the Magura blood wouldn't go amiss as the kits only come with a very small bottle of the stuff, and it's easy to spill it :roll:

i thought u were sposed to fill it from the lowest point in the system as the air, being lighter than the oil, will rise?

Yes - fill from the lowest point of the system.

But to shorten the hose you don't need to bleed it:

1 - Remove the hose at the wheel end using an 8mm spanner.
2 - Cut hose to desired length with a stanley knife.
3 - Feed hose through the nut and put a new olive on the hose.
4 - Put end of hose into the hole and screw in the nut with 8mm spanner - tighten until about 2/3 threads are showing (4 Nm according to the manual, but just tight will do!)

crap yeah, it's the vent tube that connects to the lever. think I must have done things arse about face last time then, still worked though

..they are kinda spongy so i guessed that i would give them a bleed while i was in the area.

Still can't seem to find out what differences there are between the normal service kit and the mini version?

I can't remember what's in each kit, but you'll need one fitting and hose for the caliper end, one fitting and hose for the vent pipe at the lever end, a syringe to put fluid in and a bottle to catch it coming out. The bleed hole with the vent pipe attached needs to be as high as you can get it, position lever accordingly.Stanley's fine for cutting as long as you can reach a suitable surface with the loose end of hose - you can use the cutter in mid-air.

I decided to order the mini service kit from CRC as there pretty big n trusted (and i could pay via paypal too). Also bought a cutter of FleaBay just to be sure on a straight cut.

They do specifically say in the manual to use a blade rather than a wire/cable cutter.
