I gave my fisher a clean but it sounds like the chain is full of sand when it makes contact with any teeth (front or rear or jockey) its not full of sand it just sounds like it, lack of use? Hasnt been used since surrey retrobike last august but been kept in the dry and was cleaned before it was hung up. It was a new shimano 7 speed chain last year.
any ideas?

Take it off. Fit new chain.

No take it off, diesel bath. Refit relube

Re:

I often save milk cartons, 2 pinters especially. Tip 300ml or so of white spirit in, feed chain in, screw top on and shake for a minute.

Thought your chain was clean? Look at the colour of the spirit!

It's easier to cut the bottle in half to retrieve the chain and hang up for a few minutes to air-dry. Lube straight away. Works for me.

What Marc said. I do the same but I personally prefer Parrafin. I do use white spirit now and then as it's cheaper.

Re:

I use engine degreaser, something like Gunk, but any brand will do. Clean the chain in an old ice cream tub or similar, then rinse thoroughly with hot water and leave to dry on the radiator, or in the sun on the window sill. That way there's no solvent left on the chain to thin or degrade the new lubricant when you apply it.
