Crown race ??

Thats one very different method legrandefromage :D

Crown fitted to new forks but i have a difference on around 3/8 of an inch to the steerers, so my question is how much do you lot have in your stem and do some trust having an extra few mm added to your steerers by a engineer ??

I assume that you mean that the new steerer is 3/8" shorter and that the stem therefore extends say 1/2" above the steerer? Whether or not I'd worry about that depends on the stem clamp - if two bolt and the top bolt is below the top of the steerer tube then I'd be OK with it.

Alternative is a steerer extender (but all the ones I know will only work with a steel steerer). Or I suppose as you say a welded (?) extension - never had it done so can't comment on practicality!

oldave sorry i mean the steerer may sit lower in the stem than i would like, options would be either weld more onto the steerer or use a extender like you said, do other people use welded steerers ?

I personally wouldn't fancy having 10mm welded onto the steerer. If you did want to do it, I would tighten the bolt onto the original part of the steerer tighter than the one onto the welded extension. And I would have the star fangled nut in the original part as well.

Apologies if it's too obvious to mention, but stems have various depths and various designs. If the stem you're using was by any chance 50mm deep, you could solve your problems by using one of 40mm instead. Or you could use a stem with a single bolt design, like this Pace which uses a pinch bolt.
