crown race removal

anyone used said bearing seperator?

Looks like it'll do the job the same. Certainly far less expensive than a Park tools one ! Have used them in a workshop.


Before i was a mechanic, i used to use a table (eating) knife and gently tap it between crown and race ......to separate 1st then tap it away up the tube .it works ok but i recommend covering up the forks to protect them

I bought one of those splitters but don't use it...knife job as above, hammer and flat blade screwdriver is all you need imho

I know pro mechanics that use a knife to start things then tap it off with a screwdriver.
The big park jobbie for taking them off caused pinch marks that i needed to file away before fitting on a new race.
Im content to stick to the method above

Something like that could be adapted to remove a crank where the threads have been stripped out :?

You can get a crown race remover for under £20 (I'd use UK Bike Store as I don't know the other shops)

Worth it if

A) you do a lot of crown race removal

B) you're a bit ham fisted and the last time you used the knife trick you ended up in A&E for 6 hours with the Saturday night wino's

C) you want the right tool for the job

D) the crown race on the forks you're trying to remove is as stubborn as a three day old turd stain on the bog bowl and even Cillit Bang won't remove it

Elbow grease in abottle is what you need!


Id actually recommend the ice toolz one over the park one as with the park one you cant bloody see it to get it unde the race! Bloody fiddly thing it is.
