Retro Newbie

So I picked up this bike for £10 for getting to uni and back. Originally it was meant to be a throwaway bike, but despite it's condition I've kinda fallen in love with it. Plus thanks to a friend he now has a name, I'd feel bad abandoning him...

It's pretty small, might actually be 24" wheels. Shimano derailleurs and cassette. Everything is covered in a thick layer of grime and it doesn't exactly shift cleanly. In terms of age I'm guessing 90s/late 80s.
My plan is to clean it up a bit. It'd make a nice pub bike if nothing else.
Anyone know anything about it?
