Correct tool to remove this BB lockring?

I recently acquired a 1980s(?) Raleigh Equipe and I am in progress of stripping it down to the bare frame to use it as a single speed commuter, I have got as far to take all the components off the frame except one side of the bottom bracket.

It appears to be a lockring, part of the cotterless bottom bracket if i'm correct?

Which tool do I need to unscrew this from the BB shell? I have tried adjustable pliers but I don't have any big enough, but is it as simple to use a bigger pair? Also I have looked around and seen a "box end tool" maybe that is what I need.

They are 'difficult' to remove even with the right size spanner as they tend to be very tight. Best way is to clamp the two flats in a vice and twist it off using the frame

It will be clockwise to loosen

Are you wanting to re-use the BB? If not, I think I'd be tempted to pass a hack saw blade through there, re-attach to the hack saw and cut enough of a groove in there to be able to knock the thing round with an old chisel!!

Although depending what the cup is made from, this can be easier said than done.... :facepalm:

I'd go with the vice suggestion. Plenty of plus gas or wd40 beforehand.

first, it looks like a fixed cup, not a lockring. We may as well get the terminology right.

secondly, the middle spanner in nob's collection is for a lockring, which would be fitted to the adjustable cup on the other side. You can clearly see the teeth ot engage with the slots on such a lockring. I don't even know how you would begin to mate this with your fixed cup.

I've never yet failed using a well-attached bench vice. If its too seized for the vice (after plusgas), you've got no chance knocking it out after cutting slots.

The cup is not an expensive one, so whatever your method, don't feel bad about destroying it on removal

remember to take note as the earlier post mentioned that it doesn't unscrew the normal way it has a reversed thread....your friendly LBS will remove it for around the price of a cuppa!

BITD we would take them out for free if the shop was quiet, we had some fiendish T bar tool which bolted onto the fixed cup and then in a vice or by hand. LBS would be way cheaper than buying the tool.
