Converting to hybrid

I recently built up an old Marin Bear Valley SE. It rides really well and my average speed seems to be quite a bit higher on this bike than on my others.

I want to ride it more on the road so need some more suitable wheels (I think) than what is currently fitted, i.e. thinner.

I'm not sure the size (width) of the current wheels but the tyres are 26 x 1.9.

Any suggestions as to the best hybrid size wheels/tyres to get as I'm afraid it goes completely over my head

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers.

Leave the wheels, stick on some 26 x 1.5 road tyres. Amazing the difference no knobbies makes.

You can't usually fit different size wheels in a frame, because the brakes will no longer line up with the rims and you may run into frame clearance issues elsewhere.

However, there are plenty of 26" road tyres that will fit on your existing rims. Take a look here for some ideas: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/c/cycle/7/Tyres_-_MTB_Road/. In general, thinner section tyres can take more pressure and will give less rolling resistance on road, but will be less happy on soft surfaces.

If you want a good mix of on and off road, try something like the Shwalbe Hurricane: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=36216 which has a smooth centre section for the road, but some tread on the shoulders for when you venture off road.

Got some 26" Continental Grand Prix tyres on my road based MTB, just changed back to suspension forks from rigid though as the 100psi was giving me too much of a pounding....

Ordered some Schwalbe City Jets, £17.75 delivered for a pair. Just can't believe the difference  Cruising speed is well up, as for sprints - better watch the speed limit

That's what I have on my "road" mountain bike. £17 sounds like a good deal, I'm sure I paid a bit more than that. They seem pretty good though, I've done a fair few miles on them and they're not showing much sign of wear and I don't think I've ever had a puncture.

Anyway, someone like Mavic make an adapter (like a brake booster) to move cantis bosses higher and use 28" wheels from road bikes :D
