converting to disc's

I have to say I don't really understand the point of discs on the back - it's not exactly as though I've ever had problems locking the back up, even in chalky gloop like in Surrey or Herts.

Sure, you'll have slightly longer-lived rims, but a rim only costs £30 anyway.

rain, mud, buckled wheels, changing pads, disc does out perform in each of those conditions i think :)

I run Maguras - pads are a snap fit, and stock HS33s can successfully pull up my Tandem when touring on a 1 in 4 in torrential rain. I've seen disc pads wear through in under 100 miles and pad swaps ain't a trailside fix...

If you buckle the wheel then usually you can bend it enough to get you home - and the supposed longer rim life of discs is irrelevant.
Don't get me wrong, running discs on the front makes a lot of sense. It's just that the amount of braking on the rear before it locks up is around 1/3 that of the front, and that's usually within the capability of a rim brake.

Am I on the right forum? I thought this was Retrobike UK?

whats your point?

and

1994 - Sachs (SRAM) introduces PowerDisc, the first mass-produced hydraulic disc brake system

i was fasinated by disc brakes.

Did you actually have either of those systems fitted to your bike, what would be the ratio of people who used those brakes compared to cantilevers, Vees, Maguras or even drum brakes? That's my point.

What's people's thoughts on converting a mid 90's bike to discs? .

Or any older bike for that matter......if you like the frame and want to keep it - DO IT. Its your bike, adapt it to suit the type of riding you do. I got fed up wearing out rims on bumpy gravel tracks - with discs thats not an issue

that's not a fair comparison, the only difference between a Paul derailleur and the contemporary Shimano derailleurs was that the Shimano part actually worked. The Paul derailleur was not significantly new technology.

And besides, the OP is talking about retrofitting discs to a bike that was built to use rim brakes, and he's not planning on using some rare early discs, just adding modern parts to an old bike.

Someone should also warn him about the perils of adding new metal to an elderly aluminum frame too.
