What's people's thoughts on converting a mid 90's bike to discs? It seems to be simple enough with the frame. Although unsure about welding onto manitou 4's. Or even if I should bother with the conversion and leave as is.

I was thinking about this recently..............

After a lot of thought I just bought a new bike.

You really need disc specific forks rather than try to modify what you have. The frame is a whole big can of worms, and by the time you have bought brakes and wheels it's not really cost effective IMHO.
Just keep the retro retro, and buy a new bike for modern stuff.
Some fairly decent deals about just now.

I bought this for quite a nice price.

If it's a steel frame then you could get a disc tab welded on, I'm not 100% sold on the other disc adapters on the Market though.
For the front you really need forks with a disc tab, not sure when they started to become commonplace but you'd want to find some fairly retro ones as modern forks with more travel might upset the handling of the bike somewhat.
I've toyed with the idea of a disc conversion, but the cost of the brakes and wheels would be more than the bike is worth! so for now it's staying retro, and the money can be saved for something more modern with disc brakes already in place.

It's an ally Marin IFT 7005 frame and can get a 7005 adapter tab easy enough. So was just thinking while it's stripped to get polished and new decal etc. weld on the tab and convert the rear to disc. Then got thinking about the front. Can of worms maybe then.

I have to say I don't really understand the point of discs on the back - it's not exactly as though I've ever had problems locking the back up, even in chalky gloop like in Surrey or Herts.

Sure, you'll have slightly longer-lived rims, but a rim only costs £30 anyway.

If you are considering the conversion, I'm splitting my modern hard tail so will have a set of dt swiss/wtb disc wheels and a set of Hayes stroker trail brakes for sale. I've also got an a2z rear disc adapter laying around. I've also got a set of fox f80x disc only forks that I can do a great deal on, as I bought them as spares so they need a service but should work a treat once done.

rain, mud, buckled wheels, changing pads, disc does out perform in each of those conditions i think :)

Recently converted my newest bike > Kona Kula 2002,

Was easy with the hangers... never looked into older bikes.
