Conversion to 2 x 10 speed - The itch that wasn't there

I am a bit scared of spreading the stays on my Alan so that out.
bonded aluminium stays? Wouldn't even entertain thinking about it.
Welded aluminum I'd have a go at, but those bonded frames bring a new meaning to the word flexible!
The weakest link would probably be the glue in the joint.

On a not so good note, the chain suck-like effect when rear cog is in the smallest and shifting from large chain ring to small still occurs. It's not as bad now though. Often it is unlikely that one would swap from large to small ring whilst on the 11 cog in the rear, the suck can take you by surprise. I wonder if this is symptomatic of 10 speed systems.
It's more likely to be losing all that chain tension in one go and the rear mech spring not being man enough to take all that slack up in one go.

Thats interesting, because i did notice that the chain slopped around a bit going from 52 to 39. I'm debating taking out another link from the chain.. will see, at the moment, i've soaking the chain in some lube. its a new chain, but am hoping that wet lube will soothe things away, otherwise I'll try taking out another link

Don't mae the chain too short that is bad. Old mech's have a habbit of not working like they are brand new, then again as I age I am finding I don't work so well any more. Everything take longer to heal, crap isn't' it.

Tell me about it. The other day I ventured off road (I usually do road rides now) and was sore for 3 days after!

BTW thanks for the info about friction shifting that worked well with 10 in the rear. I imagined all kinds of nasty trimming issues. I wonder how 11 would work?
