Confounded by brake set up on a Joe Waugh

I have recently refurbished a lovely Dave Yates built Joe Waugh 531 frame but am stumped by the brake shoe alignment-the frame is a standard 700c, the calipers are standard drop Campag Centaur (I don't think they ever made deep drop Centaur), wheels are bog standard Rigida rims on Shimano RSX hubs, but even in the highest position in the caliper slot, the shoes are too low on the rim, hitting only half the track and overlapping on the radiused section.

The front is just about passable, but the rear is dodgy. I have tried various angles of the arms, concave/convex washers etc but to no avail. I have even tried 27" and 650 wheels which predictably do not fit. What am I missing?

What type are the rear dropouts? Have the front drops been filed? The fork crown looks very "thin". Have you tried different brakes?

Looks like the type of very close clearance for Weinmann 500 or campagnolo piccolo brakes etc. Why doesn't the 650 bring the shoes nearer the rim as per Dave Lloyd 650

The rear dropouts are Columbus, don't think the front have been filed (they don't look to be but the space is more U shaped than D shaped), and the fork crown is rather slimline. I tried a set of Veloce single pivots which are a little better but still in the same ballpark.

I didn't realise that the Weinmanns were closer clearance and I'm not familiar at all with Campag Piccolo. Closer than "standard" clearance all round might well be a clue as nothing bigger than a 700 x 20 will fit on the back with either caliper (Centaur or Veloce), as a 1991 frame I figured things would be closer to current standards but I guess it was thirty years ago...

Ah, 1991 frame so a bit after my time, I looked at the Cinelli MC style fork crown and though it was quite a bit older and had been refinished. Scrub my previous post lol

Picollo drop is closer than weinmann 500. W 500s will not solve your problem.

What size is the frame? Is it a smaller ladies or child's frame designed for smaller wheels?

Looking at the tight clearances your frame was built to use ultra short reach calipers such as the Dia-Compe Aero Gran Compe which have a reach of 37-43mm. Would be great to see a picture of the whole thing.

What ^ he says. Probably coupled with 19 or 20mm tyres which were popular back then

As above, aside from the confusion as I thought it was a 70's frame it needs short reach brakes. I wonder if the short reach Veloce Campagnolo brakes of the era would work?
