Used these in Gaiole. Bit heavy with steel rings but they could be swapped and it looks the part.

Apparently there was even a trick 32T 110pcd possible with certain cranks - it needed a very slim spider and special ring bolts.

Ritchey did that to put a 28t ring on a 94mm bcd, but I've never seen a 32t ring for a 110mm crank. Any idea who was responsible?

IIRC the only 33T was made by TA, haven't seen one in years.

They're listed as in stock at Spa Cycles in the UK, Harris Cyclery and Peter White in the US. A bit special perhaps, but not all that rare. Gebhardt also make them.

Personal opinion of course, but a triple on a race bike (modern or retro) spoils the looks.
But as I get older and fatter, more compromises are made.

I now ride compacts, despite only a couple of years ago saying compacts belonged on kids bikes

The first time I was in Gaiole, I used a Sugino 110 bcd chainset with 48/34 rings and a 14-28 cog set with first generation Shimano 600 on an early eighties bike. Worked well.

The second time around, I used the same cogs with a 50/36 TA crank set and Campagnolo NR on an early seventies frame. That worked too.

I've done a few retro builds with compacts trying to keep the 'look" most recently a Dave Moulton with a square taper carbon campag 10speed chainset and also tracked down an all alloy PMP square taper compact that looks very retro,look at Veloorange components sure they do new lower gearing chainsets with a retro{prob Rene Herse replica}styling, what rear mech are you using a lot of old campag could stretch to a 28 cog, you can find campag long cage rally mechs on ebay and can buy the cages to convert a campag short cage

Thanks to all for input!! Ended up going with a Velo Orange-50/34 crankset-and their BB and a sun tour VX Gt RD. Probably with a shimano 7 spd-13-34 or sram 13-32 cassette.

Reality is I'll probably only ride this bike for special events like L'eroica and maybe a bit around where I live--all = hills.

I just upgraded my "Normal road bike" to a trek domane 6.9 with Di2--which just is really a lot of fun to ride!!

While a triple definitely has little cred when waiting for the off, it definitely looks way cooler than walking later on.

and if the first to the top had a triple (even if the chain never saw the small ring) you can bet a lot of folk would start fitting them.
