Compact crankset?

Ron-Tesch

Retro Newbie
I know it's been hashed over at length--just reaching out for some guidance!

Have a Tesch 101 with Campy record 7 speed-downtube shifters.

thinking of doing the L'eroica in California and would like to go to compact gearing.

Thinking 48-50/34 with 11-12 to 30 or 34,

would like to keep same bottom bracket if possible-don't mind changing out cranksets, chain and r. der.

Any thoughts???

thanks
Ron

Re:

30 or 34 at the back will need a long arm rear mech. It might be a hunt to get one to index with your campag levers.

If you have a jis bottom bracket, get an 80s deore mtb chainset. It will probably come as 26/36/46 or 28/38/48. Drop the inner one, replace what was the middle one with a 34 and leave the outer ring. It will be 110 bcd, same as a modern compact. If you're lucky you might even end up with a biopace outer ring.

Re:

I've used a Campagnolo MTB crankset on one of my road bikes. Centaur/Icarus/Olympus is what you need (or Record OR if you are flash :)). They have an overall shape very reminiscent of 80s Campagnolo Road Gruppos, but are 110 bcd.

Run as a triple (or omit the inner granny ring as I have and use as a double). Velobase states that they need a longer BB than road cranks (124mm is given), but I'm using an Olympus crankset on the same BB axle as I ran a Record set previously. Perhaps better clearance for cranks on a road frame?

It's 110mm pcd, so will go as small as 34T.
However the MTB chainsets need much longer bottom brackets than Campag road IIRC.

A lot depends on what chainset (and therefore bottom bracket) you have already.

... or 33t. Hard to find, but they were made.

That was true of the earlier models, but they standardized on a 111mm symmetrical axle for all road and mtb cranks for the last couple of years of OR production. The upper models have the disadvantage of Campag's splined chainring attachment, but a '93 Centaur would make a very nice road touring triple:

Apparently there was even a trick 32T 110pcd possible with certain cranks - it needed a very slim spider and special ring bolts.

IIRC the only 33T was made by TA, haven't seen one in years.

I run a 24/39/48 Campag triple using 135pcd Campag road cranks, which is really nice with a 12-23 cassette. It all shifts fine and gives a huge range without the ghastly big jump of a 34/50. The 24/39 jump is less irritating as it's so uncommonly done - just once at the start of big climbs.

Re: crankset

Interesting!! that sound like a good way to go--just curious if you needed to do anything with front derailleur-to accommodate?

thinking if I went with that setup I wouldn't have to change out front or rear derailleurs or cassette which would be nice!!!

Time to start hunting!!

Thanks
