From what I understand it's quite different these days (I dabbled nearly 20 years ago for a couple of years).. they were just introducing doorstep book selling and stuff but they don't do that any more - thankfully.
It used to be a very austere life, some elder devotees having digestive issues from poor nutrition.. and unless you were living in an ashram, you had little chance of success..
Was an incredible time though..
There's loads of conspiracy theories about the organisation too.. dating back to the 60's when Prabhupada was around..
I still retain certain beliefs but not wholesale any more.. all my books are still in the loft and my kids want to read them (although, a 10 year old wading through the Bhagavad Gita probably won't end well

)..
It wasn't the early starts that done me in.. 4a.m. and 16 rounds before breakfast. .it was living in the real world and trying to be a good devotee.. imo it's extremely hard.
And it helps if you are open to suggestion too.. .. .. more senior devotees will take on new devotees who they think can be manipulated easier. . .
I'm living the full demon life now but have a few contacts from the HK's re-made through Facebook (odd though that may sound

)
