Coloured gear/brake cables

normally you get it per metre so you will probably have to get 3m which is plenty for any bike! if you can get it in 2.5m then ideal. i havent seen a bike with no cable housing :? the housing will protect your frame and cable from wear (not all wear, just more protection than bare cables). it should also keep your cables lubed i wouldve thought (to an extent) meaning less maintenence  outer will also guide your cables as its more rigid than just the cable

again, i honestly have never seen a bike with bare cables, not fully bare anyway. you do get points on bikes where some cable is exposed, this is normal and depends on the routing. some routing allows for full outer i.e. from bar to mech or whatever, where as some will have gaps in between. if your not that bothered and you have the option, go for full outer, this is the least maintenence method

I mean the bits between the hangers, like along the top top tube (crossbar doodah.. the bit you bust yer balls on when riding a gate and slipping off the front of your razor like saddle).. there's something like 18" of either skinny sleeved or bare cable.. those bits. . .

yes thats normal, that will be where you ferrule goes in then, bare cable, then ferrule and outer again. sounds like you wont be able to do full housing unless yo get smething like this :

allows for full housing to be used

Is there a name for that skinny sleeving that is sometimes put on the bare cable between the hangers?

And what the heck are those pics of?? :?

im not sure, its normally clear though
best thing on the bare bits is something like:

the rubber bits keep the cable fro rubbing your frame

the other thing pictured goes into the existing routing and creates a clamp that will fit full cable housing and doesnt have an edge to stop the outer, so it will allow whole outer i.e. all the way through, doesnt stop it due to flange/edge

and gear and brake outer cables are different .

dont use gear outer for brakes , but the other way round is fine if inner cables fit ( they are different too ) .
