Clockwork questions...

I'd like to ask the retrobike collective brain a couple of questions about a clockwork frame I picked up on ebay the other day...

The top tube has only the rear brake and mech cable stops on the top tube rather than the single lump triple version I've seen on other frames - does this mean anything re the year? Think it is 92 (has a purple - orange fade paint job)

Trying to work out the size... measures 19.5" to the centre of the seat tube 21" to top of the seat tube, does that make it a 19" or 21"

Paid £55 for it (paint work a bit bashed - but no rust and with orginal seatpost, headset and unicrown forks) does that sound like a fair price?

Any help much appreciated!

Cheers

Dan

It sounds like a 91-92, pretty sure they changed the cables to all on the top tube in 93.

My 17" Clockwork is 17" centre to top so sounds like you have a 21"

£55 is ok for a sound frame, especially with the other bits.

Cheers jimi - that helps, building up as pub/trail bike at the min but might make it 92 spec and respray in the future - control tech stem arriving next week...

drystonepaul, good idea ;)

Looks like a 1992 size 21 to me.

Opinions differ about paint, but there's no chance whatever that I would have that resprayed. Original paint is part of the soul of a bike. Just touch it up with Kurust and craft paint, it'll look great.

cheers a '92 21" it is then, yep know what you mean about the respraying, maybe I'll have a look for some tins... anyone know any good brand colours that match?

Final Q! what is a good narrow (1.9 or less) all round off road tyre? Clearance doesn't seem too great on there.

Unfort the rereleased smokes's only come in a 2.1...

Kind of agree with Anthony on the paint but (sorry to say this  ) the orange/purple was'nt one of their best combos, saying that it does look in good nick, for touch up maybe check your local model shop, have a look at the little tins of Humbrol paints, you wont get an exact match but maybe something close.

Tyres maybe 1.8 Panaracer XC's ?, i'm using 1.95 Michelin Wildgrippers on my Clockwork, these are no longer available but sometimes come up secondhand (how i got mine)

Pretty sure a 2.1 will just fit though.

I run Onza Porcupines in winter on my '92, even deep filthy mud I've not had clearance probs. People will tell you the re-issue Porc is the devil's tyre but at £25 a pair for a kevlar folding tyre it takes some beating.

As mentioned before, all the cables were routed on the top tube from 1993 on making yours earlier. I'd say defo 1992 due to the decals being a later design(especially the 'Clockwork'). Let us know the serial number and we can confirm.

I'd just touch the paint up if I were you. Gil on this site can sort you a set of decals that match the ones it has now if you want some. Just got a set myself and they're top notch.

My frame below is a 1993 with the top cable routing. Both my '93 and '90 can run 2.1's without any trouble. :D

Thanks all for the tips and info - given me much to think about and few more tyre options - I'll get down to the model shop and get some tins...

Purple and orange was the MBUK review colour I remember back when I was in my teens so ticks that box :)

brocklanders023 looks nice and slick in the grey, I'll def get some stickers once up and running...

Here's the serial no, would be interested to get the definitive date if you can: a2050686

Cheers
