I was looking for a way to remove the rust without a lot of energy-sapping effort. Sitting on a chair. This is how it looks now. All with just an electric toothbrush. Didn't have WD40.

Aluminium foil works wonders. Scrunch it up and rub away.

yes, but it's more strenuous and will scratch the shine

Aluminium will never scratch chrome. Doesn't require a heavy hand at all.
