Cleaning advice pls

Hi
I bought an old racer, looks like a canal find.
its now in bits Whats the best thing for cleaning
all the bits ? front mech rear mech chain rings
seat post etc...
few people have said thinners,petrol and some
other things
kim and aggy were unavailable
Can anyone help ?

I've just started on a similar project....I've found the best way so far for parts is either some silicon spray and wire wool, and on the frame I used a rotary wire wheel in an electric drill! (steel frame that is....)

Part way through the rebuild now....don't think it looks too bad?

Wow ! top job
the frame I got is way past saving I think.
But the parts are all campag
it was caked in grease and oil
which was a big help
nothing seized.
The frame is a Dawes (age unknown)
I have no use for the frame
so that will be added to my scrap pile.

You say its not worth saving - but it came with campag so may be a decent frame.

If its just surface rust, you could get it sand blasted and powder coated for £40 ata local powder coaters rather than manually strip paint and refinish. If it has holes / bent bits then probably not worth it.

Agreed ^, as long as it's just surface rust and not rotted through, and the frame and forks is straight then it's saveable.

Dont dismiss it just because it's a Dawes, most Dawes frames are good, bought mine off here for £120 delivered, needed a strip, clean, new cables, bar tape etc, Reynolds 531 frame and forks, full Shimano 105, rides superb, all i'll ever need road bike wise.

Stuck the Graham Weigh stickers on it as they were easy to get off E-bay (and look better than the Dawes ones)
